Turn Your S60v3 Device Into An iPhone

Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me. I'm very proud to own a Nokia device and have never understood why people would put a Microsoft, Apple, Linux, or other theme on their phone (yes, I have P@sco's Ubuntu Dapper Drake theme but only cause it's brown).

HOWEVER, I have received numerous questions regarding this, so here it goes. I found an iPhone theme on Mobile9.com (which is surprising, apparently Apple's been sending out cease and desist letters. If they send me one, I'll take it down.) and Symbian Watch today posted the ringtone (which I'm still on the fence about) but in any case, below are your links, Apple fans, enjoy.

First time smartphone user reviews the Nokia N73

Web developer Steven Wittens got its Nokia N73 thanks to Nokia's Blogger Relations Program. A big step forward from his earlier Nokia 3310 and… he summed-up his thoughts… Fast forward to his conclusion: "The only part of the N73 that really stands out for me is the phone's form factor." He doesn't like the usability, the slowness of the device, music player, you name it.

Now wait a minute. I agree that there is a plenty of room to make N73 better, but… In his praise of the iPhone, Steven is mentioning the seamless synchronization. With iTunes? I sync my Nokia N93 WITHOUT a computer (all I need is Wireless access). Also I thought that he only needs "voice calls and SMS". Want to sync that!?

Anyway, Steven points out some interesting things. Still, there's too much Mac-loving tone in his article. I too would like to see more usability improvements to the Symbian-based devices, and am hoping that Apple's iPhone will somehow change improve the industry. Till then, the N95 rules!

Skyecaller

Skyecaller 3rd Edition is an advanced, easy to use Symbian S60 3rd Edition mobile device application that allows the user to identify both voice callers and the sender of text messages through an associated full screen image display.

Skyecaller allows the user to pair an image on their mobile device with a contact in the phonebook e.g. Contact Lisa might be associated with a picture of Lisa. On receiving a voice call or text message, the caller image and contact details are displayed on-device in full screen.

The same method applies to all outgoing calls and text messages allowing the user to determine who a call or text message is being sent to via the Skyecaller image display. This is a useful confirmation technique to help avoid communication to unintended recipients.
Skyecaller adds value to the daily mobile use experience by contributing a highly compelling, easy-to-use, interactive and dynamic visual element to all voice and text communications.

Fast facts

Founded: 1998

Number of employees: 1366

The product: Symbian OS

Core business:
Symbian creates and licenses Symbian OS, the market leading operating system based on open standards for advanced mobile phones, also called 'smartphones'.

User interfaces designed for Symbian OS include Nokia's S60 and Series 80, NTT DoCoMo's MOAP user interface for FOMA3G network and UIQ, designed by UIQ Technology, a wholly owned Symbian subsidiary.

Symbian OS

Symbian OS is an operating system, designed for mobile devices, with associated libraries, user interface frameworks and reference implementations of common tools, produced by Symbian Ltd. It is a descendant of Psion's EPOC and runs exclusively on ARM processors.
Symbian is currently owned by Ericsson (15.6%), Nokia (47.9%), Panasonic (10.5%), Samsung (4.5%), Siemens AG (8.4%), and Sony Ericsson (13.1%). Whilst BenQ has acquired the mobile phone subsidiary of Siemens AG the Siemens AG stake in Symbian does not automatically pass to BenQ - this will need the approval of the Symbian Supervisory Board.

A common question is whether Symbian OS is "open". It is not open in the sense of Open Source software - the source code is not publicly available. However, nearly all the source code is provided to Symbian OS phone manufacturers and many other partners. Moreover, the APIs are publicly documented and anyone can develop software for Symbian OS. This contrasts with traditional embedded phone operating systems, which typically cannot accept any aftermarket software with the exception of Java applications.

Symbian is also open in terms of the Open Standards it supports.
